TAIRUA:
The traditional NZ beach holiday place
Located approximately 30 minutes’ drive directly east of Thames, Tairua is one of the most desirable holiday spots on the entire Coromandel Peninsula. Located midway between Whangamata and Whitianga, and just across the water from Pauanui, Tairua enjoys long, warm summers and mild winters, and is renowned for the friendliness of its residents.
Tairua still looks and feels like a traditional New Zealand beach holiday place, so you can really relax and get away from big-city stresses here. Spread along the shores of the pristine Tairua harbour and sheltered by the spectacular profile of Paku Hill, this is a laid-back, homely place that memories are made of.
Watersports and fishing are among the most popular leisure activities here, while opportunities abound for bush walking, mountain biking, golfing, or just sitting back and passing the time in one of Tairua’s numerous cafés and restaurants.
Paku Lodge is nestled at the foot of Paku Hill, right by a beautiful sandy beach and overlooking Tairua harbour with views of the Coromandel hills. A two-minute walk takes you to the site of a new marina development and within a five-minute walk is Tairua’s stunning surf beach, with spectacular views of the Pacific.
The beach immediately in front of Paku Lodge provides safe swimming, while the surf beach at Tairua is only a 5 minute walk away. Pauanui’s long surf beach is also an option, being easily accessible by ferry from Paku Wharf. You can fish from the wharf, beach or on the edge of the harbour, or venture out on a boat trip for the day. Kayaking is something people of almost any age can enjoy. Sightseeing, fishing and diving trips are all available.
